Not able to use gmail with RSVP

I think I have set all of my settings so that the RSVP notification should go to a gmail account. When I visit the page and send an RSVP I get a big code error message at the top of the screen that says it can’t connect to the smtp server that the plugin says to use for gmail settings. Can anyone tell me what I might try to fix this or where I might find the information I need? The RSVP does go through to the plugin’s admin section just not to the gmail account.
